Registration opens March 1st, 2014!
Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter and Utah State University Extension 4-H provide a wide range of summer camp opportunities for youth in grades 1-8. Camp topics include outdoor exploration, environmental education, science, robotics, and stewardship. We try to make our summer camp opportunities available to everyone by keeping our prices affordable and providing scholarships for youth with financial need. See below for scholarship information.
In addition to summer camp programs for youth in 1st through 8th grades, we provide opportunities for teens in grades 9 to 12 to engage in our summer camps. These teens can apply to be teen camp counselors and help Swaner’s camp staff lead camp activities and keep campers safe. Click here for more information on how to become a teen camp counselor! We hope to see you this summer!
Summer Camps 2014:
Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter is the perfect place to explore the great outdoors. Campers will spend their days collecting tadpoles, frogs, insects, and other kinds of animal and plant specimens. We will also learn about animal adaptations and wildlife tracking, explore wetland and upland habitats, go on hikes, create crafts, and so much more! This camp promises to get youth outside and learning about our valuable environment.
Get your goggles on and prepare to become a scientist for a week! Campers will spend their time conducting a number of fun, exciting, and sometimes explosive experiments, as they learn about the scientific process and explore different fields of science! This camp promises to be a blast!
Get ready to make some amazing art! Participants will create all kinds of projects using natural and repurposed materials. This camp will focus on art, but also includes hiking and outdoor exploration sessions to help inspire our young artists.
Grades 5-7, both beginner and intermediate levels
Youth with all levels of robotics experience welcome! Campers will explore the world of engineering as they design, build, and program robots to complete challenges throughout the week. They will also use their imagination to complete a variety of other engineering focused tasks and games. This camp will use LEGO Mindstorms NXT kits. If your child has no to little experience, please enroll them in the beginner camp. If they have participated in FLL or completed a Lego Robotics program through school, please enroll them in the intermediate camp.
Grades 5 and 6, 7 and 8
This camp will provide youth the opportunity to get out and explore their watershed. Our home base will be located at the Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter but we will spend the majority of days out exploring. The first day we will explore a day in the mountains learning about the headwaters. From there we will follow the water through the watershed, exploring the wetlands and streams, visiting a water treatment plant, canoeing on Jordanelle Reservoir , and a number of other places. The week long camp will culminate in a field trip to the Great Salt Lake. Throughout the week campers will learn about water quality, underwater insects, and ecology. This camp is a fantastic opportunity for youth to learn about their local environment, get outside, and visit new places!
This camp is perfect for youth who are interested and engaged in all sorts of environmental topics! During the week we will learn firsthand about a variety of topics, include recycling, air and water quality, energy sources, local foods, GPS and geocaching, and a handful of others! This camp is perfect for kids who are interested in the environment and learning about how they can help to protect it. This camp will include some hiking and fun bike riding excursions!

Please Note: Youth may attend camps that are for grade levels lower than their own. However, they cannot attend a camp that is designed for a grade level higher than their own. For example, a camper entering 5th grade in Fall 2014 could attend a camp for youth entering 4th grade in Fall 2014, but could not attend a camp for youth entering 6th grade in Fall 2014. Our camps are specifically programmed to be age appropriate in terms of curriculum and activities, and it is very difficult to accommodate a variety of ages during our camps. It is highly recommended that youth are enrolled in a camp that reflects their grade level.
