Projects on the Preserve

The beauty of our open space — clean water, healthy fisheries, an abundance of nesting birds, enjoyable recreational opportunities, diverse wildlife — are so often taken for granted. For all of these gifts, our field volunteers are to thank.
We invite you to join us. Whether you are a knowledgeable naturalist or a newcomer to the field, you can make a difference. Your efforts will be rewarded each time you see a hawk in flight over Swaner’s meadow, or hear the telling chorus of frogs in the spring — an important indicator that our wetlands remain healthy.

Willow Harvest Each spring, willow branches are carefully harvested by staff and volunteers along the Swaner portion of Kimball Creek. The willows are used later in the season for stream restoration projects. |

Willow Planting Willows harvested earlier in the spring are planted along Swaner streams where denser willow stands will benefit fish habitat and nesting birds. |

Stream Restoration In the late summer, reclaimed Christmas trees are embedded in the degraded banks along portions of East Canyon Creek to prevent erosion, allow vegetation to take root, and improve fish and wildlife habitat. |

Trees and Trails Volunteers are needed year round at the Swaner Preserve for many on-going outdoor projects, from planting native shrubs to clean-up efforts along our many miles of scenic trails. |
